NBCHS Chapter of National Honor Society

About The National Honor Society...

"The National Honor Society (NHS) elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921. Learn more about these four pillars of membership here.

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, US Territories, Canada, and around the world. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

As such, NHS chapters and students are in schools that care not only about student achievement, but also community engagement"

At Northern Bedford County High School. membership in the NHS is offered to students in grades 10-`12 who meet the highest standards in scholarship, leadership, service and character. After going through a rigorous selection process; which includes an evaluation, of grades, character traits and self reported student activities; qualified candidates are presented to the 5 member "High School Faculty Council" for a final decision on membership. Guideline details include the following:

  • Must meet/maintain a 94% or higher GPA
  • Have positive character traits as determined by staff
  • Student activities must be validated by mentors / coaches

All students who pass this last level of evaluation will be invited to an induction ceremony and will at that time officially become members of the NHS.
